Things To Do In Weymouth

There’s really so much to do in Weymouth you’ll probably find you wish you could stay longer to fit it all in. From relaxing on the beach to taking a stroll along the seafront to Weymouth’s historic Harbour or Nothe Gardens  or exploring one of the nature reserves. There are so many attractions to enjoy during your stay; you really are spoilt for choice whatever the weather.

Local Attractions

There are many attractions to visit: Sea life Adventure Park, Marvel at the sculptures or even have a go yourself at Sand World, visit the Nothe Forte and gardens for some stunning views, and for walkers there is the south west coastal path, Rodwell trail and Portland. You’ll also find amusements, a cinema, and museums. Please ask us when you visit and we will be pleased to tell you about any special events. We have listed below some of our and our guests favourite things to do while they are in Weymouth.

Sealife Weymouth

Take a walk around the Sea Life park and you will find 14 themed zones some in door and some outdoor. If you like to learn more about the different animals then don’t miss the fun talks and animal feeding sessions that take place throughout the day, when you’ll get chance to meet seals, otters, penguins and more. Our favourite is the ocean tunnel where you can view sharks and the rescued turtles as they swim above you. SEA LIFE WEYMOUTH also holds special events where you can learn more or get an even closer look at some of the creatures.

Sea life is not just an adventure park; the animal care team carry out a lot of hard work behind the scenes, in both breeding conservation and rescue. Sea life Weymouth is actually the marine breeding and research centre for the whole SEA LIFE network across the UK and mainland Europe. Sea life Weymouth houses over 1000 creatures including endangered species and they run the largest and most successful seahorse breeding programme in the world. Locally they are involved in preserving the population of seahorses native to Studland Bay and the South Coast.

Open daily except Christmas Day.

Sandworld

Weymouth isn’t just famous for its sand but also the wonderful sculptures you can make from it too. Whilst you can still find the small exhibit of sand sculptures on the beach, Weymouth now has SANDWORLD where some of the most talented sand sculptors in the world have created sculptures for you to marvel at. The theme for 2014 was films and included Sherlock Holmes, War Horse and Lord of the Rings. You can even make a sculptor of your own in the sitting or standing under cover sculpting area. Opens April to November.

Nothe Fort

There’s something to interest everyone here, this Victorian Forte is filled with displays, mammoth guns and cinema areas where you can learn about the history of Weymouth and the Forte itself. The Forte is on 3 levels the top outdoor area provides views of Weymouth, both Portland and Weymouth Harbour and Portland itself. The lower level is a labyrinth of underground passageways, but is easily accessible by stairs or a lift.

Adjacent to the Fort is Nothe Gardens; this is the area from which ticket holders could watch the sailing during the 2012 Olympic Games. This area has a very different atmosphere from Weymouth Seafront, calm and tranquil! You can enjoy a relaxing stroll and some shade just watch out for some rather cheeky squirrels!

Open daily April to September, and Sundays only from 5th October to 14th December.

Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy

Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour are widely recognised as the finest sailing waters in the UK. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy offers new purpose built, on-shore facilities and hosted the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing events. The WPNSA hosts many National and international events, and is used for training by the British team. It also offers temporary membership for those wishing to use the facilities. Sailing lessons are available and are run by Sail-Laser, It is advisable to contact them before your stay if you think you would like to arrange lessons.

The Osprey Training Centre can also teach windsurfing at every level, from the complete beginner to those wishing to hone their advanced techniques. The centre puts windsurfing firmly on the map on one of the most prominent water-sports arenas in the marine leisure industry today.

Also In Weymouth

The Lodmoor area of Weymouth has much to offer, being home to both Lodmoor Country Park and Lodmoor RSPB nature reserve, both are within easy walking distance of The Seaham. At the Country Park there is a 2km circular walk with 5 green Gym sites along the way. Don’t worry this is totally optional but lots of fun! There is also a pitch and putt course.

The Lodmoor RSPB nature reserve is a quiet haven for both wildlife and people. The site is a mixture of wetland and reedbed, with a choice of trail to follow.  There is always something to see, from dragonflies in the summer to migrant birds in the autumn. Lodmoor also has the largest colony of common tern in the south-west, it’s easy to see and hear them from the paths and they can be seen rearing their young in the spring and summer.

We are lucky to have 2 RSPB reserves the other being at Radipole Lake, although this site is completely enclosed by Weymouth’s houses and roads it is packed with wildlife. It is also home to Wild Weymouth Discovery centre where you can watch the live wildlife cameras, or feed the ducks from the feeding platform and get advice on latest sightings, where to go and what to see.
